  • Det. Brian Simonsen was shot and killed by possible friendly fire during the armed robbery at a T Mobile store in Queens

The detective shot in the chest was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The suspect, identified by a police official as 27-year-old Christopher Ransom, of Brooklyn, was wounded and hospitalized in stable condition.

In a grim rite, officers from across the New York City Police Department stood and saluted Tuesday night outside Jamaica Hospital Medical Center in a cold drizzle as the remains of a detective, believed to have been caught in the crosshairs of fellow law enforcement, were driven past in an ambulance.

"That was when Detective Simonsen was shot", the commissioner said.

New York Attorney General Letitia James said it was "a painful night for all of New York City".

O'Neill added that the blame for the tragedy still rests with Ransom, saying that the 42-year-old veteran would still be alive if not for the career criminal's actions.

Det. Simonsen is the brother of Melissa Simonsen, who was tragically killed after being struck by a vehicle while crossing Roanoke Avenue in Riverhead in July 1992. The officers retreated from the store and "that was when Simonsen was shot". He was shot multiple times and taken to hospital.

A fifth season of spin-off show, Better Call Saul , focusing on White's dodgy lawyer Saul Goodman, is set to air this year. Even Gilligan himself acknowledged that when accepting the show's first Emmy for Best Drama.

At Jamaica Hospital, officers guarded the emergency room entrance as O'Neill and Mayor Bill de Blasio met with Gorman and offered their condolences to Simonsen's wife and mother.

Witnesses to the shocking shootout reported hearing at least 15 to 20 gunshots exchanged between police and the suspects. The officer was killed in what appears to be "an absolute tragic case of friendly fire", NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill said in a press conference late Tuesday. "Make no mistake about it, friendly fire aside, it is because of the actions of the suspect that Detective Simonsen is dead". The other officer's condition wasn't immediately clear, but officials said there was concern about his injury.

He was also an elected delegate for the 102nd Precinct squad. "All-time, all the time, he come in my store, all times", one worker said.

A police department Twitter account identified the detective as Brian Simonsen. He graduated from the New York Police Department Police Academy on October 24, 2000, the News-Review reported at the time.

As for the weapon he pointed at officers, police say it was a fake gun.

"He always asking us, 'How's things going?' He was always there for everybody when people need him", another worker said.

Officer Miosotis Familia, 48, was writing in her notebook when ex-convict Alexander Bonds strode up and shot her through a window. It's the second time a police officer has been shot in the city in the past three months, AP points out.
