Ohio Teen Defies Anti-Vaccine Parents, Gets Shots

  • Number of people with measles tripled in Europe in 2018, WHO says

Other youths in a similar position to Lindenberger's have taken to the Internet to find answers, leading to what has become somewhat of a trend. His 16-year-old brother, who is now considering also getting his shots, will have to wait. "My parents think vaccines are some kind of government scheme", he wrote in November. "God knows how I'm still alive".

Two months ago, Norwalk, Ohio resident Ethan Lindenberger submitted a question onto the r/NoStupidQuestions subreddit asking where he could go to get vaccinated and if it was possible to do so at age 18. "You don't just get vaccinated for yourself".

He's not the only teen with this problem. As a result, the teen was never vaccinated. In the post, Lindenberger asked for practical advice on how to begin the vaccination process, and said he had never spoken to anyone about it.

Health experts say roughly 95 percent of people should be vaccinated to create "herd immunity" against a contagious disease like measles.

Lindenberger said that his mother has tried to convince him to stop getting vaccines, but to no avail. "Any and all advice is appreciated", another user posted. That might sound like a small number, but the trend has medical professionals anxious.

Health officials are dealing with an outbreak of measles.

Jeremy Lin expected to bolster Raptors' playoff run following buyout with Hawks
Miles), and Raptors president Masai Ujiri quickly suggested the team would "attack" the buyout market after the trade deadline. The Raptors entered Monday with a 41-16 record and second place in the Eastern Conference behind only NBA-leading Milwaukee.

Her son's records indicate he was vaccinated for tetanus and hepatitis B when he was 2, but Wheeler told Undark he received the tetanus shot after he accidentally cut himself, and the other must be a paperwork mistake.

Lindenberger says he was vaccinated for Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, HPV and influenza during his first visit to the county health department and has more vaccinations scheduled for later this month. She went on to comment, "It was like him spitting on me, saying, 'You don't know anything, I don't trust you with anything". "I had grown up hearing that and when I started to move on to social media, you know, 13, 14, there was very online heated debate".

OH is one of 17 states that allow parents to opt out of required vaccines for philosophical reasons, and all but three states allow exemption because of religious beliefs, which more parents are taking advantage of.

Fatherly points out that even if health care providers were legally able to provide minors with vaccines behind their parents' backs, "in most cases it would get billed to the parent's insurance, likely (causing) conflict between the child and their families". 'Continued evaluation of prevalence and reasons for nonvaccination is needed, as are improvements in access to and delivery of age-appropriate vaccinations to all children'.

As it stands, Washington remains one of just 17 states that still allow exemptions based on personal or moral beliefs, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. The case doesn't seem to be linked to recent outbreaks in the United States.

At least 56 people in Washington and Oregon have contracted measles - a potentially deadly disease for children - in an outbreak near Portland, Oregon, triggering a public health emergency in neighboring Clark County, Washington.
