"The Houston Zoo is aware of the tiger found in southeast Houston today, February 11; however, the Houston Zoo is not involved in this case, and is not receiving the tiger, as incorrectly reported". Cottingham said the tiger, which she's calling Danielle, seemed fairly healthy, albeit a bit thirsty. It was subdued and transported to a facility managed by BARC Animal Shelter and Adoptions.
It took a little convincing before police believed the person who reported the odd discovery. "More often than not it gets big, it gets expensive, it gets unsafe, and they end up turning the animal in or abandoning it".
Cops quizzed the drug user, asking if they were high and if they were sure they'd actually seen a tiger. "They saw a tiger in this building, this vacant house that's obviously been abandoned for some time".
It wasn't immediately clear who the tiger belonged to. Police did not confirm if an owner had been identified. "So it was important that we get it out of that situation", Lara Cottingham, with the city of Houston, told the NBC Houston. "It's a attractive animal and we want it to live a happy healthy life".
"The Houston Zoo is home to two Malayan tigers, Berani and Satu, and does not have capacity to receive additional tigers".
The animal was be taken to an animal shelter temporarily before being moved to a permanent home.
