  • Race for the White House: Midwestern senator throws her hat in the ring

Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota on Sunday launched her campaign for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination on a Mississippi River bank, promising a crowd braving the cold and snow that she will "lead from the heart" and fight to move the country away from "the petty and vicious nature of our politics".

In a speech that was nearly a point-by-point rejection of the president's policies and the country's toxic divides, she told supporters, "We are exhausted of the shutdowns and the showdowns, of the gridlock and the grandstanding".

"In remarks released before that event, she says: "'I'm asking you to join us on this campaign". Our nation must be governed not from chaos but from opportunity.

"She's a very popular U.S. Senator who's really effective at passing legislation", Olson said Sunday. They include Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Kamala Harris of California, Cory Booker of New Jersey and Kirsten Gillibrand of NY.

"I have mixed feelings about her chances", Rozen said.

Not everyone at the announcement was there to support Klobuchar.

Klobuchar, who easily won a third-term a year ago, is the most prominent candidate from the Midwest to enter the race.

Klobuchar and others have credited those wins to Klobuchar's efforts to get to each of the state's 87 counties on a regular basis and to her ability win over GOP voters.

The primary field soon could expand to include prominent Democrats such as former Vice-President Joe Biden and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.

"I find her to be the most hawkish of any Democrat in Congress", said Mike Madden, a St. Paul, Minnesota resident who was with a group of anti-war protesters railing against Klobuchar's candidacy.

Four months on, the slain journalist's body has still not been recovered. A bipartisan group of senators sent a letter to Mr.

Meanwhile, former employees of Ms Klobuchar have disputed her "Minnesota nice" image too, telling the Huffington Post that at least three potential campaign managers have withdrawn over her treatment of staff.

She offers a steady, sensible political outlook that could attract the majority of Democratic voters who are more interested in electability than ideological purity.

According to CNN, she told reporters after her announcement that she can be tough and push people, but "there are so many great stories of our staff that have been with me for years and have gone on to do incredible things".

Event attendee Karissa Pecinovsky said she's wanted Klobuchar to run for president since 2016 and that Klobuchar's ideas line up with hers.

Klobuchar is expected to focus her early presidential campaign on Iowa, which borders Minnesota and holds the nation's first nominating contest in February 2020.

Sunday night, Republicans are saying she broke a promise to serve out her Senate term. "Looking forward to debating you about climate change (and many other issues)".

When Klobuchar asked Kavanaugh whether he ever had had so much to drink that he didn't remember what happened, he turned the question around.

Her high ratings at home may demonstrate electability in a general election, an asset among a Democratic base eager to defeat Trump. It also chronicled challenges including her father's struggle with alcoholism, a topic she touched on during Kavanaugh's Senate hearing, and her parents' divorce.

The couple have been cheerleaders for Klobuchar over the years at parades and various conventions; they carried a banner in support of their daughter-in-law at Minnesota State University's Homecoming Parade in downtown Mankato last year.
