Seventeen people have died in a fire at a hotel in western New Delhi.

The dead included a woman and a child who tried to escape by jumping from a fifth-floor window of the 65-room hotel in the shopping district of Karol Bagh.

G.C. Misra, Delhi fire brigade director, said the blaze had been brought under control and that 35 people were rescued by firefighters in an operation lasting several hours.

Sunil Choudhary, Deputy Chief, Fire Officer speaking to ANI said, "Fire has been doused".

The injured were rushed to three hospitals including the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital (RML).

Most of the victims - including many from a wedding party - were said to be sleeping when the fire broke out.

Karol Bagh, in central Delhi, is popular with tourists and lined with hotels and markets. Ten members of a family from Kerala were also staying at the hotel.

Cooling process is underway and the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, he added.

Delhi's urban development minister Satyendar Jain said authorities appeared to have been negligent in enforcing building laws in the surrounding area.

Last week, a fire broke out in a hospital in Noida, forcing an emergency evacuation of scores of patients and other people. "Inside in the rooms, wooden panels were there on the walls", Jain said. According to the eyewitnesses, many people are still feared trapped inside the hotel.

"Buildings can only be constructed up to four floors in Delhi", Delhi's home minister Satyendra Jain told NDTV.
