On Saturday night there will be some rain across southern England with snow falling over hills in places.

'Sunny spells for many of us, also a mixture of rain and showers in other parts of the UK. As this morning progresses, however, the rain and cloud cover will head towards Scandinavia although, for most areas in the south, it will still be a wet start to the day.

Mr Keates added: "It will be a brighter second-half of the day for Wales, south-west and northern England with a few showers thrown into the mix as well".

"The low pressure area was deepening rapidly as it approached the north west of Ireland and north-west Scotland on Friday morning".

A yellow weather warning for strong wind until 3pm covered much of Wales, central and northern England and southern Scotland, with a separate yellow warning for northern Scotland that said flooding could follow heavy rains.

'That (hill snow) will clear through Sunday morning, with blustery showers following behind.

On Saturday a kitesurfer died amid strong winds in an incident on the Saunton Sands beach in north Devon, although a spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police would not confirm whether the death was weather-related.

Forecasting Sunday's weather, Met Office meteorologist Nicola Maxey said: "There is the chance of patchy rain and this could be heavy in places".

A yellow weather warning has been issued from 10.30am until 8pm in Portsmouth and the South East.

Met Office forecaster John West said: "We are seeing some strong winds, severe gales particularly off the coasts and over higher ground".
