Google is attempting to make Chrome users more secure with the release of a new extension that automatically checks to see if the passwords you are using are safe. So Password Checkup uses a combination of anonymization and cryptography to protect the exchange, using a technique called "blinding" to create a secret search index.

If you fall within the category, you'll then be alerted about your login credentials having been leaked in the past; and prompted to change your password.

Google has announced a new security feature for Chrome browser, but this time it comes in the form of an extension that can be downloaded by users on all desktop platforms. People are urged to use separate, strong and unique password for each online account. "We also launched our Digital Wellbeing app that helps users understand their online habits so that technology can help them rather than hinder them in their daily lives", adds Mgwili-Sibanda.

Google also means to publish a paper with the details about the extension's underlying protocols and cryptographic principles, so that independent experts might evaluate them. Those respondents ages 16-24, however, are more likely to use 2FA but are less likely to have changed their passwords within the past year.

Google is rolling out two new tools to help the password-challenged beef up their security game. In the blog, Google says it "won't bother you about outdated passwords you've already reset or merely weak passwords", like the ones topping this abysmal list.

Google, however, says that it does collect statistics related to breaches and incidents, which should technically help the company improve the service.

Google spokesperson: Kurt Thomas, Security and Anti-Abuse Research Scientist said: "Your privacy and security is of the utmost importance".

Google has always been interested in protecting Chrome users' passwords, in part because they are often the very same ones used to access Google services.

The new Password Checkup Chrome extension was developed to expand Google's data breach protections to cover all other accounts a user might use to log into other websites and apps.

Again Google claims that it will share only the basic information with the apps in such events.

"We only share information with apps where you have logged in with Google".

Last month, hackers dumped more than 2.2 billion usernames and passwords on internet compromising the security of personal information.
