Snapchat and Facebook also disclose daily active user numbers, though Twitter says its own figure is "not comparable" as it only includes users who are seeing ads.

"We enter this year confident that we will continue to deliver strong performance by focusing on making Twitter a healthier and more conversational service", he added.

The reason for the change is likely due to the fact that this new metric shows user growth on the platform. In the fourth quarter, the number of monthly of active users was down year over year by 9 million people to 321 million people. Twitter reported a record-setting revenue of $909 million in the fourth quarter, a 24-percent increase compared to this time a year ago.

The company said there was a 16% year-on-year decrease in reports of abuse on Twitter in 2018.

"2018 is proof that our long-term strategy is working", chief executive Jack Dorsey said in a statement.

For the quarter through March, Twitter said it expected total revenue of between $715 million and $775 million.

Twitter is reporting that revenue and profit and its daily user base all grew in the final three months of 2018.

The San Francisco company disclosed its daily user base count for the first time, putting the figure at 126 million, up 9 percent from a year earlier. The company made $1.2 billion in profit for the year, its first profitable year since going public in 2013.

Overall revenue rose to $909 million in the quarter, beating the estimate of $868.2 million.

Twitter has made its first annual profit in its 13-year history but another fall in the number of its users and a disappointing sales forecast took the gloss off the results and sent its shares down almost 10 per cent. It has hundreds of millions of daily users and many rely on it to ...

Twitter's slice of the digital-advertising market is expected to decline this year as Facebook and Alphabet 's (GOOGL) Google tighten their grip and Amazon.com (AMZN) makes significant strides, according to eMarketer.

The company, however, reported a better-than-expected 24 percent increase in fourth-quarter revenue, helped by growth in its video advertising business.
