Dramatic Increase in Teens' Smoking Risk With Previous Vaping

The American Council on Science and Health notes that, "Unlike nicotine gums and patches, vaping, colloquially called e-cigarettes, mimics numerous mechanisms of cigarette smoking, making them less psychologically stressful while easing people off of the nicotine that kept them smoking".

The researchers analyzed data from three waves of the nationally representative Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study (2013-2016) in their effort to evaluate the association between prior e-cigarette use and use of other non-cigarette tobacco products with later cigarette initiation over a roughly 2-year period. Second-hand smoke can be especially harmful to children, and CDC estimates that second-hand smoke caused more than 7,300 deaths from lung cancer every year from 2005 to 2009.

Still, e-cigarettes don't come without health risks and experts warn against potential dangers like nicotine addiction, heart attack, and, depending on the vape flavour used, popcorn lung. In 2015, the government's public health agency, Public Health England, endorsed an independent report that found e-cigarettes were significantly less harmful than tobacco cigarettes and should be embraced as a way to help smokers quit.

Strother said 97 percent of e-cigarettes contain nicotine, which is addictive. "We do think there's something unique about e-cigarettes, and they're being taken up without knowledge of the extent of their consequences". Nearly 179,000 youth who have tried cigarettes and more than 43,000 who are now smoking would not be if they had never started vaping, the study found.

The New York Times reports that a yearlong, randomized trial conducted in the UK shows that e-cigarettes are almost twice as effective as smoking cessation products like patches or gum, which in the United States are the only two smoking cessation products approved by the FDA.

"Smokers have a range of options available to help them quit, including nicotine replacement therapy, prescription medication or e-cigarettes".

Overall, teens are four times more prone to trying traditional tobacco cigarettes if they've ever used an e-cigarette, the researchers said.

The multi-centre trial, which involved nearly 900 smokers who also received additional behavioural support, found that 18.0 per cent of e-cigarette users were smoke-free after a year, compared to 9.9 per cent of participants who were using other nicotine replacement therapies.

A third of UK firms consider move abroad over Brexit
A European Parliament committee backed visa free travel earlier this week and the decision was signed off by EU ambassadors today. Spain has already secured a right of veto over whether future Brexit arrangements can apply to Gibraltar.

"The youths initiating cigarettes through e-cigarettes represent a substantial public health challenge that may warrant stricter regulation of youths' access to e-cigarettes", the report says. "It does not support the unlimited availability of e-cigarettes".

Myth #4: Vaping is not effective in helping people quit smoking.

Those given e-cigarettes were encouraged to buy future supplies of their own choice of strengths and flavours, and all participants received weekly one-on-one behavioural support for at least four weeks.

"The US Food and Drug Administration has not found any e-cigarette to be safe and effective in helping smokers quit", said Jennifer Hobbs Folkenroth, who is the American Lung Association's senior director of tobacco. Those devices have largely been overtaken in the U.S.by Juul and similar devices that have prefilled nicotine cartridges, or pods.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has more about e-cigarettes and teenagers. The researchers said one reason e-cigarettes were found to be more effective may be that they allow for better tuning of nicotine doses to individual needs.

What's more, 80% of those in the study's e-cig group were still using e-cigs at the one-year mark.

Myth #3: E-cigarettes are just as unsafe as combustibles because they contain nicotine.
