Trump bears most blame for shutdown

By a wide margin, more Americans blame President Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress than congressional Democrats for the now record-breaking government shutdown, and most reject the president's assertion that there is an illegal-immigration crisis on the southern border, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, travelling Saturday in Abu Dhabi, claimed that morale is good among US diplomats even as many work without pay.

An emergency declaration by Trump could break the stalemate by letting him use existing, unspent money to build the U.S. -Mexico border wall, without needing congressional approval. "There should be timely negotiations on border security after the government is open".

However, doing so would require invocation of a national emergency to stand up in court - which may be unlikely. In addition, 52 percent of respondents said that they did not consider the situation at the US-Mexico border to be a crisis, with only 45 percent describing it as one. "I have the absolute right to do it". "Whatever you want to call it, it's OK with me. Because this is something Congress should do".

"I am proud to shut down the government for border security", Trump told Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and then-House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi during a televised press conference at the White House.

"I think it ends when the Senate Republicans say we've had enough. Think? Did I say think?" she said.

Trump sent a series of Twitter messages on the shutdown Sunday morning, including one that returned to an original theme of his 2016 presidential campaign: that many immigrants are criminals.

The partial government shutdown has now become the longest in USA history.

Sen. Coons: Trump's 'Closeness' to Putin Is 'Alarming'
President Trump has denied keeping details of his meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin from his own administration. "That comes back to the question, again, of why the president wanted to do this?" she asked.

But there was another election, in November, and the effect of that is that Democrats now control the House and they refuse to give Trump money for a wall. The chamber wrapped up business for the week without taking up the House-passed bill.

Trump has tried various angles to pressure Democratic negotiators, but they have not visibly budged from an offer to support some border security spending - the figure of $1.3 billion has been floated - but not the $5.7 billion he wants for a wall.

Trump already has threatened to withhold disaster-recovery approved in the wake of California wildfires. However, two-thirds of Republicans would support the president's decision to use those powers.

Meanwhile, the impact of the shutdown began to mount.

But Republican congressman Mark Meadows, who is close to the president, said that option was not under serious consideration.

It has left hundreds of thousands of public workers unpaid and government offices closed. Around 800,000 federal workers did not receive they salaries on Friday, and some have had to sell their possessions or look to raise funds online, Reuters reported. Some have resorted to selling their possessions or posting appeals on online fundraising sites to help pay their bills.

Trump mocked them for "having fun" while he remains in snowy Washington. "Keep an eye out for warning signs of trouble", Director R.D. Party leaders say they won't agree to fund any kind of wall or barrier between the United States and Mexico beyond what's already in place, and Trump insists he won't agree to reopen the government until the wall is funded.

"Your families will get your paychecks", he told U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the agency's Washington headquarters. Today, 70 per cent of Republicans say they strongly support the wall, an increase of 12 points since January 2018. But the Mexican government has refused and Trump is now demanding that Congress provide funding. "If we can't at the end of three weeks, all bets are off", Graham said.
