Shareholders Sue Google's Parent Company for Alleged Sexual Misconduct Cover-Up

  • Google's being sued for paying millions of dollars to former execs accused of sexual harassment

The growing cases of workplace harassment led to a walkout of 20,000 Google employees in November past year, seeking change in the culture and more transparency. The complaint was targeted at the company's top executives and committee members, including co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, venture capitalist John Doerr, investor Ram Shriram and Alphabet chief legal officer David Drummond, among others.

The suit seeks the return of over $90m from the severance packages paid to two former executives and reforms of Alphabet's corporate governance and share structures.

The lawsuit doesn't seem to be about damages, as such, but more about changing the way Google behaves in future. "In this way, Alphabet and the Board were able to maintain optics and superficial compliance with its code of conduct, internal rules, and laws regarding sexual harassment".

"There has been substantial evidence of sexual harassment at Google, and yet there hasn't been the appropriate follow-through", said Louis Renne. The New York Times reported that members of Google's board approved Mr Rubin's stock grant in 2014 after an inquiry into the allegations against him began.

News of these payouts first surfaced in late October previous year, with the two former executives including Android's creator Andy Rubin and former head of Google Search Amit Singhal. The company has thus far declined to issue a comment as have Rubin and Singhal, who have also denied the allegations.

We will see what that means. "We have to decide day by day". '[Jordan] Henderson will train today for the first time. Who deals the best with their problems has the most success. "That's my preferred rhythm, to be honest".

A lawsuit filed by shareholders on Thursday alleged that Alphabet directors were complicit in behaviour that harmed the company by not reporting their executives' behaviour to authorities.

During his time at Google, Rubin was allegedly involved in human sex trafficking and is said to have offered hundreds of thousands of dollars to women employees in the company for, in his own words, "owning" them.

One of the suits alleges Google suffered millions of dollars in damages in part from lost productivity when employees walked off the job in protest of the payouts to disgraced executives.

"Google's culture of racism, discrimination, and sexual harassment is not the result of a few individual bad actors - it's built into how the system works, and won't be fixed without structural change", they wrote.

The shareholder, James Martin, is suing each of Alphabet's current directors, a former director and several current or former executives on behalf of Alphabet itself, in what is known as a shareholder derivative lawsuit.
