Brian Kolfage, a triple-amputee Air Force veteran, raised more than $20 million on the crowd-funding platform to build a wall along the U.S. -Mexico border.
The website offered the refunds after Kolfage said the donations would go towards a non-profit he created to build the wall, rather than to the USA government, as he originally promised. GoFundMe spokesman Bobby Whithorne said "it's up to the campaign organizer to turn donations off".
The organizers of a GoFundMe campaign to fund the construction of a wall along the southern USA border have scrapped plans to hand $20m over to the federal government and plan to build the wall privately instead.
Kolfage also issued an update via the GoFundMe page, using bullet points, and it stated that the federal government won't be able to accept their donations in the near future.
When he gave an update, Kolfage did not say missing the goal was the reason for the refund.
As of early Saturday, the campaign had raised $20,328,658, and more than 340,000 people had donated to the GoFundMe page within 26 days.
That nonprofit wasn't part of the original description of his GoFundMe campaign.
The campaign, created in December of previous year, had raised $20 million.
The group also includes Kris Kobach, former Kansas secretary of state, who in a statement said that "when government fails in its most important duties protecting its citizens and preserving the country's sovereignty We the People have the right to do it ourselves".
But it reported that three military hospitals named by Kolfage said they never received any funds from him.
"Our highly experienced team is highly confident that we can complete significant segments of the wall in less time, and for far less money, than the federal government", he wrote on his fundraising page.
A partial government shutdown over the border wall between President Trump and Congressional Democrats is now tied for the longest in USA history.
Whithorne said all donors will be contacted via email about receiving their refund.
Donors to the GoFundMe campaign can either choose to accept their refund or request their donation be redirected to the newly established corporation. I am honoring that commitment today. "We will promptly refund your donation unless you tell us you approve our new plan for action", Kolfage said. "They are WRONG. WE ARE BUILDING THE WALL and you can STILL donate or opt in if you donated before January 11th TO SUPPORT the plan".
"When Americans see us completing real miles of lovely wall, we know that we will raise the many billions we need to finally secure the entire border", Kolfage wrote to supporters on his GoFundMe page. The money will be automatically returned if they do not, said Whithorne.
