EU Wobbling, Juncker Admits No Deal Brexit 'Would Be a Catastrophe'

Brexit could be cancelled depending on how next week's vote on the Withdrawal Agreement plan goes, according to the Foreign Secretary.

The UK is due to leave the European Union on 29 March 2019 automatically, whether the deal is passed by MPs or not.

Jean-Claude Juncker said Friday that despite the difficulties of Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May to get the deal through Parliament, he continues to hope she can pull it off next Tuesday.

PM Theresa May will present her deal before parliament on 15 January, putting it to a vote. However, with more than 100 Tory MPs opposing the deal, it is expected to be rejected.

Given a straight choice between Mrs May's offer or "no deal", 41 per cent support her deal, compared to 32 per cent who back "no deal".

Conservative and opposition MPs have slammed a top minister for fear-mongering after he said derailing or stopping the government's Brexit plan would see a rise in far-right extremism.

"I'm saying this would be (an) incredibly damaging breach of trust and it would also be very bad for Britain's reputation overseas, having chose to leave the European Union, if we in the end for whatever reasons found we weren't able to do it". We have been shown, in the starkest terms yet, that there are plenty of people who want to thwart Brexit.

Several injuries reported after explosion in Paris
Witnesses described on French television the overwhelmingly sound of the blast and people trapped inside nearby buildings. Firefighters pulled injured victims out of windows and evacuated residents.

"The idea that if MPs vote down the deal, we head to no-deal has always been a false threat and the Foreign Secretary has now effectively admitted it".

"What is more likely if this deal is rejected is that we have the risk of Brexit paralysis and when that happens no one knows what might happen and the big risk, and what people worry about, is that we don't actually deliver what people voted for", Jeremy Hunt told Sky News. "Instead of embarking on another fruitless effort of renegotiation, it is time to hand this crucial decision back to the people".

The prime minister has warned MPs that failing to back her Brexit plan would be a "catastrophic and unforgivable breach of trust in our democracy".

The Secretary of State said it was "right" for the Government to make preparations for a no-deal Brexit, comparing it to wearing a seatbelt when driving a fast vehicle. I will be speaking against this "deal" and can not support it in the upcoming vote.

Asked whether she agreed with Mr Hunt that the United Kingdom could thrive after a no-deal Brexit, Ms Rudd told Today: "This is a strong and great country, we will find a way to succeed but I do not think that no-deal would be good for this country and I'm committed to making sure we find an alternative".

People have interpreted that as me saying that I too would vote for the deal if I had a chance.

While Grayling stopped short of predicting riots on the street if Brexit was weakened or reversed, he painted a picture of a "less tolerant society" and a "more nationalistic nation", as indicated by the incident with pro-Remain MP Anna Soubry.
