A snowstorm in the Midwest has created pandemonium on many Missouri highways on Saturday afternoon, causing almost 900 accidents and 1800 stranded motorists.

And in IN snow accumulations of 5 to 7 inches are expected between midnight Friday and 7 a.m. Sunday in portions of central, south central, southeastern, southwestern and west central Indiana.

The storm is dumping its heaviest snowfall on areas west of St. Louis, where about a foot and a half of snow was recorded, with more still falling on Saturday, Orrison said.

"We have a strong snowstorm that's stretching 1,400 miles from Kansas to the East Coast", CNN meteorologist Haley Brink said.

The storm is headed east, where it's expected to blanket Washington and Baltimore, forecasters said.

St. Louis had recorded 10.4 inches of snow by 12:30 p.m., with higher accumulations in other parts of Missouri. "St. Louis is seeing its worst snowstorm in five years".

The weather system is forecast to affect an 1,800-mile corridor of the United States from Colorado to the mid-Atlantic.

On the storm's southside, more heavy rain will fall on the already saturated South. Snow is covering roads in those states.

More than 1400 flight cancellations and more than 12,000 flight delays were associated with the storm on Friday alone, according to a report from Reuters.

In Kansas City, Missouri, "we are up to 7.2 inches of snow so far with this storm", the local National Weather Service office said at 7 a.m. ET. If travel is necessary please refer to MoDot's interactive road map here: Missouri DOT Road Conditions.

Philadelphia is expected to receive a few inches of snow, but areas north of there are expected to be spared, Orrison added.

Metro areas that are included in warnings are Kansas City, St. Louis, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Washington D.C., Roanoke and Greensboro - these areas are most likely to see risky travel conditions and heavy snow and/or ice according to The Weather Channel. Lower accumulations are expected in DE and Baltimore, as well as around Richmond, where precipitation Sunday should be freezing rain. The Southeast has seen abundant precipitation in December and January, and the additional rain could put a strain on already-high rivers.

The University of Missouri men's basketball game at the University of SC was also canceled Saturday because of weather-related travel issues, according to the team's Twitter account.
