Woman Wakes Up Unable To Hear Men's Voices

  • Woman wakes up to discover she is deaf to male voices

The woman, identified only as Chen, recently woke up one morning and was unable to hear her boyfriend's voice, the Daily Mail reported. Before she went to bed one evening, she experienced nausea and a ringing in her ears. When she woke up, she couldn't hear her boyfriend's voice.

Presumably, a little unnerved, she checked into Qianpu Hospital to see an ear, nose and throat specialist, where she was able to hear her doctor speak but not, bizarrely, a patient who walked into the room. Xiaoqing diagnosed Chen with reverse-slope hearing loss, a rare type of low-frequency hearing loss that likely impaired her ability to hear deep male voices.

This condition hinders Chen's ability to hear low frequency sounds, such as the average grown man's voice.

The rare condition is present in almost 13,000 hearing loss patients, and stress can be a factor. Indeed, autoimmune conditions in the inner ear can cause balance problems that may lead to vomiting - a symptom that Chen described to her doctor, Clark noted.

Fiat-Chrysler to pay more than $300 million in emissions cheating settlement
The settlement is the second between the US government and an automaker over allegations of cheating on diesel emissions. If Fiat Chrysler doesn't get at least 85% of the vehicles brought in for repairs, it will face additional fines.

It is not easy to treat RSHL as most health care professionals are trained to treat high-frequency loss. In this condition, the plot of the audiogram runs from the upper-left-hand corner of the graph and travels downwards like a ski-slope.

The extremely unusual condition, which reportedly affects only about 3,000 people in the U.S. and Canada, causes patients to lose their ability to hear low-frequency sounds, including average male voices.

Although there are a number of causes of reverse-slope hearing losses, the most common causes are genetic abnormalities, Wolfram syndrome and Mondini dysplasia. The symptoms of RSHL include difficulty understanding speech on the phone, understanding the voises of women and children but not men, and inability to hear low-frequency environmental sounds. By 2050, that figure is expected to hit over 900 million.
