Paris police say there was an explosion and fire at a bakery, near the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris, which was believed to be caused by a gas leak. Witnesses described on French television the overwhelmingly sound of the blast and people trapped inside nearby buildings.

The building is on Rue de Trevise in the 9th arrondissement of north-central Paris.

"The situation is now under control", Interior Minister Christophe Castaner told reporters on the scene.

According to the BFMTV broadcaster, a bakery caught fire after the blast. Debris from a burned vehicle and broken glass littered the pavement.
