Excessive body fat linked to smaller brain

  • Scientists have learned more about the brain in the past 10 years than in all other time periods combined. Take a look at these discoveries to see how to improve your memory and boost your mental power

The scientists found that people with both higher BMI (defined as equal to or greater than 30 kg/m2) and higher waist-to-hip ratio measurements had lower grey matter volume in the brain compared to those who were leaner.

The researchers, in particular, found a link between belly fat and lower volumes of gray matter, which contains the neurons and involved in the processing of information in the brain.

"It may be possible that someday regularly measuring BMI and waist-to-hip ratio may help determine brain health", Dr Hamer added.

It was unclear whether obesity lead to brain structure abnormalities or the other way around, he said.

The study looked at 9,652 people with an average age of 55.

Experts think fat could trigger the immune system to overreact and damage the brain, causing it to shrink and raising the odds of obese people starting to lose their memories. In the end they found that high BMI linked to smaller brain volume.

Giuliani: Trump Legal Team Should be Able to 'Correct' Mueller's Final Report
Special counsel Robert Mueller took over the inquiry upon his appointment May 17, 2017, just over a week after Trump fired Comey. The bill's Republican sponsors don't believe that Trump will try to fire the special counsel.

"Our research looked at a large group of people and found obesity, specifically around the middle, may be linked with brain shrinkage", Hamer said.

Using a technique called magnetic resonance imaging, researchers studied the volumes of white and grey brain matter and volumes in various regions of the brain.

They found nearly 1,300 study participants were obese and apple-shaped, and that they had less grey matter, which is important for thinking skills.

They found no significant differences in brain volumes of white matter. However, excess weight was associated with shrinkage in specific regions of the brain: the pallidum, nucleus accumbens, putamen (linked only to a higher BMI) and caudate (linked only to a higher waist-to-hip ratio).

Obese people carrying weight around their middle had the lowest average amount of grey matter, at an average of 786 cubic centimetres, compared to people of a healthy weight who had an average of 798 centimetres.

Though the study didn't look at potential mechanisms linking visceral fat and brain shrinkage, one hypothesis is that this type of fat is thought to produce inflammatory substances that may play a role in brain atrophy, the researchers said. The latest study finds an intriguing link between body fat, especially around the middle, and the brain. Potential causes of lower brain volume Cara Bohon, an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Stanford University School of Medicine, wrote in an email that the study's findings are "not particularly new or surprising".
