According to a media report, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) will pay more than US$ 650 million to settle a case over diesel emission cheating. The multinational auto manufacturer will pay $305 million to the state of California and the federal government, recall around 104,000 vehicles, pay vehicle owners an average of $2,500 in compensation, and pay approximately $78 million in litigation and other penalties. The recalls include model year 2014-2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ram pick ups.

The settlement resolves allegations that FCA used illegal software to get about 100,000 diesel trucks past laboratory emissions inspections and onto USA roads.

In last year's third quarter, Fiat Chrysler, also known as FCA, took an $810 million (700 million euros) charge to deal with possible US diesel emissions settlement costs, cutting into the company's profits.

The Fiat Chrysler settlement won't include a determination that the company committed wrongdoing, a second person familiar with the matter said. If Fiat Chrysler doesn't get at least 85% of the vehicles brought in for repairs, it will face additional fines.

Turkey says anti-terror operation into Syria imminent
Pompeo also made a surprise visit to Iraq on Wednesday where he met with the prime minister. Again, this is not a box likely to be checked no matter how long US troops stay in Syria.

In 2016, Volkswagen pleaded guilty to criminal charges and agreed to pay a $2.8 billion penalty to settle government lawsuits. "Fiat Chrysler's conduct was serious and egregious".

The settlement is the second between the US government and an automaker over allegations of cheating on diesel emissions. The company will also pay a $305 (£239 / €265) million civil penalty and "implement a program to mitigate excess pollution from these vehicles". Four months later, the Justice Department sued on the EPA's behalf alleging that software on diesel engines allowed them to emit more pollution on the road than during EPA lab tests. VW was found to have colluded with Bosch to pass USA emissions only while its vehicles sensed they were being tested by federal agencies, while otherwise they operated in a completely different driving mode that polluted up to 40 times above the legal limit. He declined to comment when asked about the status of the investigation.

"Fiat Chrysler deceived consumers and the federal government by installing (hidden software) on these vehicles that undermined important clean air protections", said Andrew Wheeler, acting administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
