The true victor initially thought his lottery scratchcard, bought at a shop in Vacaville last December, was worth $10,000 (£8,000). He went home to share the good news with Saosongyang and their other roommate. The next day, when he went to the Lotterys district office in Sacramento, officials told him that the ticket he turned in was not a victor and had in fact been altered.

He suspected foul play - that one of his roommates had stolen the ticket in the night - and went to the police.

On Monday, following a joint investigation of the District Lottery Office and the Vacaville Police Department, lottery's investigators invited Saosongyang to its office to collect his winnings.

Lottery officials want to make sure that the true owner of the ticket will still be able to collect his $10 million.

But when he attempted to collect his winnings the following morning, he was told his ticket wasn't a victor and had been altered.

A California man was arrested Monday after attempting to cash in his roommate's winning lottery ticket worth $10 million, police said.

On Saturday, demonstrators used a construction site vehicle to smash open the doors of a government building. Yellow Vest protesters are hoping to trigger a bank run with a nationwide coordinated cash withdrawal.

As part of its normal probe into winnings over $600, staff from the lottery office viewed surveillance cameras at the Lucky Grocery Store where the ticket was purchased on December 20.

Lo and behold - the next day, Saosongyang attempted to cash in the winning ticket, which he discovered was worth not U.S. $10,000 as he'd thought, but U.S. $10 million.

Turns out, according to Vacaville police, the man's ticket was not his ticket.

"Immediately sign the back of Lottery tickets in ink; put them in a secure place you will remember; and, visit one of nine Lottery district offices throughout the state to begin the claims process", the statement advised. Numerous scratch-off winners have later been unmasked for stealing the tickets, either from friends or from the grocery stores where they were employed.

The Vacaville PD posted the entire story of his misguided plot and arrest on their Facebook page, along with a picture of him being hauled off by plain-clothes police.

Saosongyang was booked into the Sacramento County Jail on charges of grand theft.
