  • These Are the 5 Best Diets for 2019, According to Experts

For overall healthy eating, the best diet plan is the Mediterranean diet, according to U.S. News & World Report's annual diet review.

The Mediterranean diet emphasizes eating fruits, veggies, whole grains, beans, nuts, legumes, olive oil and flavorful herbs and spices; fish and seafood at least a couple of times a week; and poultry, eggs, cheese and yogurt in moderation, according to U.S. News and World Report.

The eating plan doesn't discourage drinking small amounts of alcohol - such as a glass of red wine for women and two glasses for men. Research also links the Mediterranean Diet to longer lifespans.

The Mediterranean diet took over the No. 1 spot from the DASH diet, which had maintained the top ranking for eight years in a row.

Although the popular Keto diet ranked high for fast weight loss, it landed way down on the Best Diets list - tying for number 38.

Judges voted on 41 diets and ranked them in nine categories, including Best for Weight Loss and Easiest to Follow.

For many, the start of the new year signals the start of a new diet.

The flexitarian diet encourages people to try alternative meat options, like tofu, but leaves room for flexibility if you can't quite fully give up meat.

Deputy US trade representative Jeffrey Gerrish will lead the American delegation, China's Ministry of Commerce said. The Dow was off 5.6 percent for the year, with the broader Standard & Poor's index of 500 stocks down 6.2 percent.

"On these types of diets, you often don't learn how to manage holidays, stressful days or special occasions".

Here are the other diets that topped the list.

Lifestyle diets, such as the Mayo Clinic diet and MIND diet, are healthier and more sustainable than weight-loss plans such as the Ketogenic or Atkins diet are, the panelists concluded. In fact, one study found the diet may reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease by as much as 53 percent.

Weight Watchers - now called WW - was fourth. Although created to help people lose weight, experts say its focus on healthier living makes it a smart overall diet to follow.

WW's Freestyle program applies points values to foods, with higher points for foods high in saturated fats and sugars, and lower points for foods with high levels of protein.

But the diet topping any list isn't necessarily the best diet for you.

Lack of scientific evidence for health benefits and severe restriction of foods - including certain healthy foods - were listed as reasons for low scores.
