Ocasio-Cortez challenges Nancy Pelosi by opposing her 'dark political maneuver'

Democrats seize control of the House on Thursday with fresh voices and new energy as they prepare to take on President Donald Trump, many of them inspired to run because of his presidency.

One of the five key ways the new rules will "modernize Congress", according to Democrats, is the restoration of budgetary rules that are unpopular with some progressive Democrats.

The package removes a requirement that a three-fifths majority is needed to increase federal income taxes.

PAYGO will require new mandatory spending increases to be funded either by cuts in mandatory spending or increases in revenue, which could be done through taxes. Though many believe it to be a logical way to rein in spending, some argue that Paygo is a way to handicap progressive programs. "It is bad economics", Khanna tweeted. The austerians were wrong about the Great Recession and Great Depression. "At some point, politicians need to learn from mistakes and read economic history".

The decision by Ocasio-Cortez is an early signal that the incoming lawmaker won't be shy about using her vote and social media megaphone - she already has more than 1.7 million followers on Twitter - to oppose Pelosi when she considers it necessary.

"PAYGO isn't only bad economics, as Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) explains; it's also a dark political maneuver created to hamstring progress on healthcare+other leg", Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. "We shouldn't hinder ourselves from the start". "She knows what she's doing", Alexandra said.

Troy Tulowitzki signs with New York Yankees
They will pay the majority of his $20 million contract, with the Yankees responsible only for the league-minimum $555,000. Once one of the best infielders in baseball, Tulowitzki hit hard times after being traded by Colorado to Toronto in 2015.

Rep. Ro Khanna of California and Rep. -elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of NY said they would vote against the rules changes - in the second vote Democrats will take in the majority after ostensibly electing Pelosi as the new speaker - because of the inclusion of a fiscal measure known as "pay as you go", or PAYGO.

Michael Zetts, the communications director for Ryan, told Newsweek the congressman had not yet decided how he'd vote on the rules package, but that he did oppose the PAYGO proposition. "Critical investments in education, infrastructure, and health care should not be held hostage to budgetary constraints that Republicans have never respected anyhow".

Drew Hammill, a spokesman for Pelosi, tweeted in response to Khanna on Wednesday, pointing out that the federal law remains in place regardless of what rules House Democrats adopt - and that including the measure in the rules would allow Democrats to "designate appropriate offsets" rather than allow the Trump administration to make the across-the-board cuts mandated in law. Ocasio-Cortez, a self-described democratic socialist, has become a star on the left for her pugnacious attitude in advancing liberal causes.

After the new House is seated, one of the first orders of business will be approving the new rules package governing the House for this term.

The rule would require that all new spending be paid for - either by increasing taxes or by budget cuts.
