  • US Fails to Win UN Condemnation of Hamas

U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley and her Israeli counterpart blasted the United Nations for its failure Thursday to condemn rocket attacks by Palestinian terror group Hamas.

But after a procedural move by Kuwait and Bolivia, the body adopted a rule that meant the resolution needed a two-thirds majority to be adopted.

In the end, 87 countries voted in favor, but was not enough to meet the two-thirds requirement, so the proposal failed.

In a symbolic stride, the USA resolution did garner support by a majority of members, but failed because it required a supermajority.

"Hamas calls on all states that stood with the American administration and the Israeli occupation in the United Nations to review their positions and correct their historic and risky mistake", the terror group said on its official website.

The U.S. resolution sought to chide Hamas for firing rockets into Israel and infiltrating the country with underground tunnels, and called for an end to the violence.

Haley said that, in an average year, the UN General Assembly votes on a resolution opposing Israel twenty times.

Having been there ringside Saturday at STAPLES Center, it was some of the best atmosphere I've experienced on a fight night. If they wanna be singled out, he gotta obtain all the belts and just, he gotta leave no doubt.

"The General Assembly has never uttered the word in any resolution about Hamas", Ambassador Nikki Haley said.

Islamic Jihad spokesman Daoud Shehab said that the failure of the United States resolution was a "severe blow" to the United States and Israel.

There is no difference between Hamas, and Al-Qaida and Boko Haram, he said, adding that as the Jewish people are celebrating Hanukkah, the plurality of Member States of the United Nations has chosen to condemn Hamas. The Times of Israel called the failure a "crushing defeat to Israel and its American ally after weeks of diplomacy". "Israel has no respect for this organization of which it is a member". This was echoed by his counterpart with the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, Tala Abu Zarifa, who suggested that the failure to get the resolution adopted, "is a victory for worldwide justice and the legitimacy of the Palestinian resistance".

Hamas, which won the last Palestinian legislative elections in 2006, says it's the legitimate representative of the Palestinian people and is engaged in resistance against the Israeli occupation. "Your silence in the face of evil reveals your true colors", Danny Danon told the world.

That is why Israel's Ambassador at the United Nations, resorted to calling legitimate resistance "evil" in his response. According to Danon, who opposes the two-state solution, this was simply, "Another anti-Israel resolution". And he said it would also turn attention away from Israel's occupation, settlement activities and "blockade" - whether in Gaza, the West Bank or east Jerusalem which the Palestinians want as their future capital. "The wise policy of the (PLO), which has fought and is still fighting to realize the hopes and aspirations of our people for freedom and independence, will remain the guardian of the national project", PLO President Mahmoud Abbas' spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh said in a statement.

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu said that although the two-thirds was not achieved, this was the first time there was a "sweeping majority of countries " who had stood up against Hamas. "The victory will be in addition to the Palestinian right, no matter how long". Haley told the General Assembly before the vote that "peace must be built on truth".
