  • Soyuz heads to ISS on first manned mission

An American, a Canadian and a Russian blasted into orbit Monday in the first launch of a piloted Russian Soyuz rocket since a dramatic failure in October when a booster failed to separate smoothly and the crew plummeted to earth in an emergency return. The hatch to the Russian ship ferrying the crewmembers opened at 2:37 pm. The spacecraft made four orbits over six hours as it chased down the space station for the docking.

This is the first spaceflight for both McClain and Saint-Jacques and the fourth trip to the space station for Kononenko. Eastern, Saint-Jacques and his two crewmates floated in from the docked Soyuz capsule, embracing the astronauts who have been at the space station since June.

McClain, Saint-Jacques and Kononenko will spend more than six months at the space station doing research and experiments in biology, Earth science, physical sciences and technology. "We feel very ready for it", NASA astronaut McClain said.

A few minutes after their rocket lifted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Russian space agency Roscomos announced that the capsule was "successfully launched into orbit".

Saint-Jacques has spent years training for the six-month mission, which was originally scheduled for December 20 but was moved up after the aborted Soyuz launch.

"We have liftoff", a NASA television commentator said as the rocket roared into the sky under 930 pounds of thrust and at a speed of 1,770 kilometres per hour.

Some of the investigations they will conduct are sponsored by the U.S. National Laboratory on the space station, which Congress designated in 2005 to maximize its use for improving quality of life on Earth.

That same month they will be joined by another three spacefarers, a crew which will comprise the two men that aborted the launch in October, Nick Hague (NASA) and Alexey Ovchinin (Roscosmos) and a newcomer, Christina Koch (NASA).

The latest trip comes less than two months after a previous mission on October 11 failed, when two astronauts from the USA and Russian Federation were forced to make an emergency landing, as a result of a problem with the booster.

Saint-Jacques, 48, has spent years training for the six-month mission, which was originally scheduled for December 20 but was moved up after the aborted Soyuz launch.
