Buzzcocks lead singer and songwriter Pete Shelley, whose work was integral to the birth of punk rock and influenced later generations of alternative artists, has died of a suspected heart attack at the age of 63.
He wrote his best-known song, "Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've)" in 1978, and it hit No. 12 on the British music charts.

Born in April 1955 as Peter Campbell McNeish, Shelley grew up in Leigh, Lancashire, and he formed the band with Howard Devoto in 1975. The band released their first EP, Spiral Scratch, in 1977 through their own independent label New Hormones.

In prior interviews, the band said they thought the use of the name would only last for one pilot or just a few episodes, but the show ended up running for years. The band debuted in 1976 in Manchester, opening for the Sex Pistols. Buzzcocks also reunited several times in the ensuing decades; their most recent album was 2014's The Way.
Shelley achieved Australian chart success as a solo artist in 1981 when his new wave, synth-pop solo single Homosapien reached number four on the Australian charts.
Shelley's solo career then spawned 1983's XL1 and 1986's Heaven and the Sea before Buzzcocks reformed in 1989.
