  • Paris riots continue despite fuel tax delay

'He won the French title at PSG, but they didn't succeed in the Champions League and some players didn't show respect to him.

The protests began last month with motorists upset over the fuel tax hike, but have grown to encompass a range of complaints, with protesters claiming that Macron's government doesn't care about the problems of ordinary people.

It is a major climbdown by the government of President Macron, who had said the measures were necessary to combat climate change and meet budget deficit reduction targets.

But Yellow vest spokesman Benjamin Cauchy said it was not good enough, as the movement wanted the taxes to be cancelled, not postponed.

Paris Saint-Germain's home Ligue 1 football match against Montpellier on Saturday has already been called off, as has an electro music festival in the city centre.

His attitude - "I stick to my guns" -aggravated the stand-off as Parisians walked and hitchhiked to work, travel plans were wrecked and public anger intensified - peacefully.

Planned tax increases on petrol and diesel on January 1 will be suspended for six months, while hikes in regulated electricity and gas prices will be frozen during the winter.

A joint statement from two major trucking unions called for action beginning on Sunday night to protest against a cut in overtime rates, and asked for an urgent meeting with the Transportation Minister.

The "yellow vests" are so called because they have taken to the streets wearing the high-visibility yellow clothing that is required to be carried in every vehicle by French law.

Former Patriots cornerback Brandon Browner sentenced to 8 years in prison
Children were present during the attack, so charges for willful child endangerment were added on top of the attempted murder. The site reported that in exchange for the pleas the robbery, burglary and false imprisonment charges were dropped.

A bust of Marianne, the national symbol, was also smashed.

Macron's popularity has slumped to a new low since the first demonstrations took place on November 17.

"We need taxes, but they are not properly redistributed", protester Thomas Tricottet told BFM television.

High schools and universities across France erupted after Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin proposed a lower wage scale for recent graduates. BFM said he was shot in the head with a rubber bullet but authorities did not confirm that.

He has refrained from speaking publicly about the protests and has largely remained in his palace residence.

It is unclear whether the government's latest moves will put an end to the protests.

Across France, four people have been killed in accidents linked to the demonstrations and road blockades, and hundreds injured. One activist said Wednesday that he fears more deaths if Saturday's "yellow vest" demonstration in Paris goes ahead, and urged Macron to speak out and bring calm to the nation.

Griveaux said the wealth tax reform had not been "a gift to the rich" and was aimed at encouraging wealthy individuals to invest more in France.

Chalencon, a 52-year-old blacksmith, said the public needed Macron to "admit he made a mistake, with simple words. that touch the guts and heart of the French".
