Canada Arrests Huawei CFO; Extradition Hearing to US Planned

The arrest was confirmed in a statement to The Globe and Mail by the US Justice Department, with a bail hearing set to take place this Friday.

The ministry added it could not provide further details due to a publication ban that was sought by Meng.

"The company believes the Canadian and USA legal systems will ultimately reach a just conclusion", the statement said.

Reuters reported in April that usa authorities were investigating what has grown to be one of the world's largest smartphone manufacturers for the "alleged shipping of us -origin products to Iran and other countries in violation of us export and sanctions laws".

"The Chinese side has lodged stern representations with the U.S. and Canadian side, and urged them to immediately correct the wrongdoing and restore the personal freedom of Ms Meng Wanzhou".

"At the request of the United States side, the Canadian side arrested a Chinese citizen not violating any American or Canadian law", a statement from the Chinese embassy in Canada said. Meng adopted her mother's surname.

Meng's arrest comes as Ottawa and Beijing have been engaged in exploratory talks on a free trade agreement for the past two years, which would be the first deal of its kind between China and a western country.

The New York Times meanwhile said that the company had been subpoenaed by the Commerce and Treasury Departments over alleged violations of Iran and North Korea sanctions.

Earlier this year, it barred United States companies from exporting to Chinese telecommunications firm ZTE over violations of the Iranian sanctions, effectively shutting down the firm.

In August, U.S. president Donald Trump signed an act to ban the use of Huawei components or services that are "essential" or "critical" to the systems they are used.

Several months after Donald Trump signed a bill into law preventing US government agencies from buying certain products from the Chinese electronics manufacturer, Huawei's CFO has been arrested in Canada.

Skycom was described by Huawei as one of its "major local partners", although the Chinese company said neither it nor Skycom ultimately provided the HP equipment.

BT was also removing Huawei equipment from its existing 3G and 4G networks.
