  • Australian cricketer Usman Khawaja’s brother arrested over alleged planned terrorist attack

The 39-year-old was arrested in Parramatta, west of Sydney, at 8.30am today, a New South Wales police spokesperson said.

A police source has confirmed the brother of the Australian cricket star is now being questioned by detectives in relation to the alleged attempt to pervert justice, and forgery, by making a false document.

Police said in a statement that "the arrest relates to documents allegedly found on University of NSW grounds in August this year containing plans to facilitate terrorism attacks".

Police reportedly said at the time of Nizamdeen being cleared of any wrongdoing: "The (Joint Counter Terrorism Team) received definitive advice on the handwriting that has resulted in the action to discontinue the prosecution".

His brother Usman Khawaja is one of Australia's leading batsmen.

Willing added that the grievance was over a woman, and that line of enquiry was "part of the process" being investigated.

"In relation to the charging and the subsequent dropping of the charge against the Sri Lankan citizen, we have offered, and have paid his court costs", Willing said.

Usman Khawaja is expected to line up for Australia in the first Test against India, starting in Adelaide on Thursday.

Arsakan Khawaja had been arrested by the police in the suburban Sydney on Tuesday and now is being investigated regarding the case and producing false documents, which had the target list of high-profile people and imply his former university colleague Nizamdeen.

Australian police now say they "regret" arresting Sri Lankan-born Nizamdeen.

Nizamdeen spent four weeks in solitary confinement at Sydney's Goulburn Supermax prison before all terrorism charges against him were dropped in October.

The Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported Nizamdeen was now planning to sue police. "I just ask that you please respect my privacy, and my family's privacy". "It's a matter for the police to deal with it", the 31-year-old star told reporters.

"Out of respect for the process, it'd be inappropriate for me to be making any further comment".
