  • NASA looks to outsource Moon delivery services

"We are going", is an important part NASA's motto for its return to the Moon, and to get there, the space agency will need corporate partners. Under this framework, NASA hopes to have its next rocket combination, the Space Launch System and Orion capsule, fly to the Moon by 2020 with crewed flights planned for 2023.

SpaceX has been a contractor for Nasa since 2012. CLPS is a multi-award contract worth $2.6 billion over the course of its 10 year performance period.

The next race to the moon will be a multibillion-dollar competition among private companies - including Cambridge-based Draper. Both Bridenstine and Zurbuchen acknowledged that some of the winners might not be able to deliver on their landers, while new companies may emerge that could be eligible to join the program through future "on-ramps".

NASA continues to study the Gateway with USA industry and worldwide partners for a configuration that could allow for earlier crew expeditions, more science and technology demonstration capabilities, and increased room for astronauts to live and work.

NASA has said it expects work on a new space station laboratory to start as soon as 2022.

But no United States spacecraft has touched down on the Moon since the last Apollo mission in 1972, and it's been exactly 50 years since NASA last sent a robotic mission to the lunar surface.

Instagram rolls out 'Close Friends' feature for private Story sharing
Instagram has launched a new feature dubbed " Close Friends " that lets users share their stories with a smaller group of people. Instagram is adding a feature to make it easier to share photos and videos with fewer folks.

The plan includes turning over low-Earth orbit human spaceflight, such as the International Space Station (ISS), to commercial operation, establishing an orbiting command module called Gateway for long-term lunar orbit for humans, reusable landers making round-trips to the moon, and ongoing robotic surface exploration and building with lunar resources. "NASA will be conducting a cultural assessment study in coordination with our commercial partners to ensure the companies are meeting nasa's requirements for workplace safety, including the adherence to a drug-free environment", the agency had noted in a statement.

Remarks made on Thursday, Nov. 29 reinforced NASA's assertion it was returning to the Moon. "What seems to have changed is the color of carpet", he said.

After the September 6 incident, Bridenstine said he "had a number of conversations" with the SpaceX founder and believes "you won't be seeing that again".

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about NASA's list are the names that aren't on it. This is not going to be 'Lucy and the football' again. During Council meetings, U.S. government officials from civilian and military space along with space industry leaders such as SpaceX and Boeing, as well as other significant public and private institutions, hold discussions with high ranking members of the USA government, the Vice President being the Chairman.

The last time a human was on the moon, over 45 years ago, the mission totaled $25 billion, which adjusted for inflation would look more like $150 billion today.
