  • Signature Microsoft Office apps get new-look logos

The company announced that the redesigned Office icons come as part of its focus towards pushing Office as a collaborative suite platform that allows users to access it in real-time the products from any device anywhere. I'm forever losing Outlook among a sea of blue icons-Word, Edge, OneDrive, Teams, Yammer, and Skype-and yearn for a return to the golden glory days. Part of those updates involve gradually implementing Microsoft's Fluent Design language throughout the operating system.

Microsoft is rolling out a redesign of its app icons for Office 365. The letter representing each Office program has also been downsized.

The redesigns implement Microsoft's language which the company has incorporated into Windows 10 since past year. And Office works across platforms, as it's available on Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android.

And if Microsoft is to eventually bring the same style to other products, Windows 10 is likely going to be one of the first products to get the new design.

Traditionally, the letter occupied two-thirds of the icon, and the symbol took up one-third.

For students and desk workers all over the world, the Microsoft Office app icons are, ahem, iconic.

The new logos look three-dimensional and more like modern app thumbnails. Strong colors have always been at the core of the Office brand, and new icons are a chance to evolve our palette. The design changes to Office go beyond just the icons, however.

"Our design solution was to decouple the letter and the symbol in the icons, essentially creating two panels (one for the letter and one for the symbol) that we can pair or separate", Jon Friedman, Microsoft Office's design head, said in the blog post. Outlook Mobile, in particular, is getting overhauled with support for shared mailboxes and updated gestures.
