Instagram has launched a new feature dubbed "Close Friends" that lets users share their stories with a smaller group of people. Can you even consider someone a real friend if they don't choose you as their "close friend" on Instagram?

[Image: courtesy of Instagram] It's not a new idea-Facebook itself also lets you maintain a list of Close Friends, as well as ones for other sorts of acquaintances-but Instagram's take on the concept is a bit more public than some. From here, you'll be able to add any number of your followers to your Close Friends list.

What we thought was interesting about stories is the content is typically really fleeting, temporary, something that you just see for a couple of seconds and then you move on.

Instagram is adding a feature to make it easier to share photos and videos with fewer folks. Your Close Friends will see a green ring, rather than the usual purple, around your story.

Instagram Stories are great for quickly sharing what's going on in your life - but sometimes you don't want all your followers to see them.

That's certainly made the app a much-needed bright spot for Facebook, which as a Reuters piece notes today is increasingly focusing on the property as its fastest-growing revenue generator while the larger social network's core platform "has come under fire from regulators pushing to improve information safeguards for individual privacy, to combat addiction to social media, and to stop misinformation or fake news".

Snap also bagged a $250 million (£195m) investment from Saudi Arabia's Prince Alwaleed bin Talal as it shifted toward a self-serve model for advertisers.

The update is likely to further complicate the already high-stakes social dynamics of Instagram accounts, particularly for teens, which popularized the "finsta" phenomenon in the first place.

Instagram Stories have, in the past, been an all-or-nothing affair.
