  • Cars are prevented from entering or exiting the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center Tuesday Nov. 27 2018 in Bethesda Md. Security officers found

The Montgomery County Police press office said Tuesday afternoon that it received a call to assist for a report of an active shooter at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

NSA Bethesda tweeted at 2:15 p.m. that an active shooter had been reported in the basement of a building.

But just after 3 p.m., the Department of Defense confirmed that it was only a drill.

The all clear was given a few minutes later.

However, the U.S. Navy later posted on Twitter that an error in the use of the mass notification system led to the scare.

Dutch Ruppersberger tweeted earlier from the hospital reporting the situation and saying he was in a conference room with others. No indication so far of an active shooter.

The Navy said a unit at Walter Reed conducted an "ad hoc drill" and there was never an active shooter.

But then another part of the Navy said no it was a false alarm.

Brown said he expects Markelle Fultz to proceed with a doctor's appointment Monday to have his right shoulder examined. Philadelphia is 14-8 on the season but 5-2 since acquiring Butler on November 12.

NSA Bethesda spokesman Jeremy Brooks said the incident "was an accident".

Naval Support Activity Bethesda gave the all clear on the Maryland base that houses the military hospital after security found "no indication" of an active shooter.

"First responders are on scene and initial reports indicate there are no signs of an active shooter", local authorities have announced.

People inside the facility were scared and sheltering in place after receiving text alerts and emails about an active shooter. Montgomery County police, however, told WTOP that they had been called as if it were a real incident.

The complex was previously known as the National Naval Medical Center or Bethesda Naval Hospital, until it was merged in 2011 with the Army medical center named after Dr. Walter Reed. The all-clear was given after an hour, when no shooter was found.

Reports of a possible active shooter emerged Tuesday afternoon, prompting a large police response and leading workers and patients to take shelter.

Walter Reed Army Medical Center is seen February 9, 2007, in Washington.
