  • NASA engineers celebrated InSight landing with NFL handshake

They were developed and built in NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to transmit information to NASA from InSight. One took one last photo of the red planet that the satellites' chief engineer, Andy Klesh, titled "farewell to InSight. farewell to Mars". That photo came from a camera low on the lander.

Museums, planetariums and libraries across the USA held viewing parties to watch the events unfold at JPL.

The spacecraft was launched from California in May on its almost US$1 billion mission. Like on Earth, the field would have protected it from harmful solar winds billions of years ago.

The seismic data collected by InSight will also be used to figure how Mars was formed, and reveal much about its internal structure, which geologists know very little about. Eastern Time, successfully completing a six-and-a-half month journey of more than 480 million kilometers. The remains of a liquid core could suggest that Mars once had a magnetic field.

NASA's InSight mission touched down on the surface of Mars on Monday at approximately 3 p.m.

This time is called the "seven minutes of terror" - when the spacecraft enters Mars' atmosphere and a ton of small steps and events have to go 100 percent correctly in order to have a successful touchdown. In the next few hours the device needs to open up solar panels. "We will be able to take a census of the dust devils and better understand their behavior and what they can then teach us about the Mars atmosphere in general". "And Mars is a great place to go and start to study that".

But, at the same time, he cautioned the USA was prepared to forge ahead with the new tariffs in the belief China would fold first. Perhaps one of the most striking consequences of the trade war is what is happening to some farmers in the US.

The robot will not be spending the duration of its mission snapping landscape pics and selfies, however, but will instead conduct a core-to-crust investigation of the Red Planet's deep interior - the only planet apart from Earth that mankind will have studied in this way.

InSight's primary instrument is a French-built seismometer, created to record the slightest vibrations from "marsquakes" and meteor impacts around the planet.

Apollo missions to the moon brought seismometers to the lunar surface as well.

InSight contains key instruments that were contributed by several European space agencies. This will include taking planetary temperatures, investigating what the planet's various rock layers are composed of, and using radio transmissions to generate data on Mars' axis.

For the full deployment of instrument probe in two or three months, and the first image was taken with the camera, which helps to organize the work of scientific instruments. NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter relayed the signals of the landing, which were received on Earth this morning.

The twin "Cubesats" tagging along for the flight to Mars represented the first deep-space use of a miniature satellite technology that space engineers see as a promising low-priced alternative to some larger, more complex vehicles.
