Since 2011, NASA has had a contract with Russian Federation to fly American astronauts to and from the ISS on Soyuz rockets. Boeing is also expected to follow suit with their unpiloted test flight in March and the official take off in August.

The Washington Post also said that the U.S. Air Force had started paying attention to Musk's drug abuse behavior immediately after the podcast, in which he sipped whiskey and smoked marijuana. The move comes after company founder Elon Musk was seen smoking pot.

According to the Post, both companies will undergo hundreds of interviews with employees at various levels, which will help NASA gauge whether those companies are truly capable of carrying out their upcoming manned spaceflights, which will be the first to launch from the United States since the retirement of NASA's Space Shuttle program.

SpaceX and Boeing are the two private agencies selected under NASA's Commercial Crew Program.

The United States space agency NASA has ordered a safety review of SpaceX and Boeing, two companies it has hired to fly astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS), according to US media on Tuesday. "Flying safely has always taken precedence over schedule.", said NASA Spokeswoman Marie Lewis.

NASA said it would conduct a "cultural assessment study" of the SpaceX and Boeing. 7 January the first flight of the camera Crew Dragon without a crew.

The review into the "safety culture" of both Boeing and SpaceX will begin next year, NASA associate administrator for human exploration, William Gerstenmaier, said, TechCrunch reported.

"We fully expect our commercial partners to meet all workplace safety requirements in the execution of our missions", said NASA in a statement.

The retirement of the U.S. space shuttle program in 2011 has left the United States without its own spacecraft for ferrying astronauts. SpaceX received $2.6 billion from the program. The first crewed test flight of the capsule, known as Demo-2, is now targeted for June 2019; an in-flight "abort test" that proves out Crew Dragon's emergency-escape systems will take place between the two demonstration missions, NASA officials said in today's update.
