Go get your flu shot! | Health Opinion

Every flu season, there are predominant strains of the virus, so medical experts predict which strains will be most active, and they formulate the vaccines in response.

And the vaccine doesn't just benefit the person who receives it.

These are meager efforts when compared to the roughly $1 billion spent annually on developing an HIV vaccine and the many billions that have been spent on vaccines for the Zika and Ebola viruses, which have little relevance to Americans.

The Health Unit is reminding everyone that the best way to protect against the influenza virus is to get the flu vaccine, which is safe. Depending on how good the selections of strains are, during a given flu season the effectiveness can vary widely.

Influenza vaccination prevents millions of medical visits, tens of thousands of hospitalizations and thousands of deaths each year, even with vaccine effectiveness estimates around 40 percent to 60 percent, the CDC said.

"It's really important that people eligible for a free flu jab take the offer up".

Statistics like that can seem impersonal, but this one isn't: "One hundred and eighty families put a child in a grave previous year because of a vaccine-preventable infection", according to Wendy Sue Swanson, a pediatrician at Seattle Children's Hospital.

The flu virus spreads quickly. There are many different flu vaccine options this season, which include high dose and adjuvanted vaccine for adults aged 65 years and older. Marshall County Health Department (MCHD) is offering the flu vaccine.

"I encourage people to not delay, and to get a flu vaccine", Illuzzi says.

Within the population, a vaccine's effectiveness varies widely because it is affected by the general health and age of the recipient. Adults with weakened immune systems or young kids can spread the infection to others for even longer times.

If you think you may have the flu, stay at home and rest until you feel better.

McKinstry and fellow immunologists are studying a group of white blood cells called T-cells.

Goodhue County Health and Human Services and Pine Island School District are lowering that number by organizing a Flu Vaccination clinic for anyone 6 months or older. "We want to turn it on, and we also want to make it as effective as possible".

Coun Tracey Dixon, lead member for independence and wellbeing, said: "Flu on top of existing health conditions increases the chance of serious health complications". And, as reminder, having received a flu shot in March 2018 has nothing to do with this season.

"We are expecting influenza to pick up in November", Bolden said in the release, "and the peak is expected to last through February".
