  • Videos posted to Twitter and broadcast on television showed a man repeatedly swinging an object at two police officers

The knifeman was shot as he tried to stab two officers on a central Melbourne street after he had stabbed three people on Friday, Nov. 9, according to Australia's Perth Now. The reason for the attack has yet to be confirmed.

Footage from the scene shows a man earlier swinging a knife at two uniformed officers near a burning auto before he was shot.

The officers were seen trying for at least a minute to detain the man peaceably as his attacks on them continued, before one office shot him with a weapon.

The suspected attacker was shot by the police and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

In December 2014, a 17-hour siege in which a gunman took 18 people hostage in a Sydney cafe ended with two hostages dead and the gunman killed by police.

Police said they knew the identify of the suspect but declined to name him due to "operational reasons".

Victoria Police said a bomb response unit had been called to the area and was now making the scene safe.

Police said that there was no known link to terrorism at this stage and that "we'll keep an open mind as to whether there's any link".

"We thank those bystanders who did get involved and we're thankful our police are in a good condition and for the bystanders that did stand up", Mr Ashton said.

Footage captured the shocking scenes as a auto went up in flames and police shot the knife-wielding man in the chest after he confronted officers as they arrived at the scene. One of them died of his injuries in hospital.

Melbourne attack: Man arrested after fire and stabbings
Later, a man was arrested after he was shot at the scene and taken to a hospital under police guard in a critical condition. The spokesperson confirmed that one person had died in the stabbing attacks and that the attacker was in hospital.

Victoria state police Commissioner Graham Ashton said the suspect, who was originally from Somalia, was known to police and the incident was being treated as terrorism.

Another man was also seen on footage using a chair and attempting to hit the attacker with it.

One of the stabbing victims died at the scene while two are in hospital.

About 4.31pm, police send out a media alert asking the public to avoid the Bourke Street area.

"We ask the public, unless you've got a objective to be here, please avoid the area, we'll provide regular updates through the media in relation to when the area is safe and clear", he said.

Melbourne was also the scene of two fatal car-ramming incidents past year, but neither was linked by police to terrorism.

Streets were closed and trams halted while police attend the scene.

Witnesses then described that the police attempted to disarm the man with the help of two witnesses as the suspect kept lunging at them.

Victorian premier Daniel Andrews' office sent out a statement following his press conference.

Friday's incident occurred in the same street where the accused driver James Gargasoulas allegedly drove down pedestrians during the lunchtime rush in January 2017.
