Sri Lanka heads for showdown as Rajapakse rallies support

  • Sirisena has been Sri Lanka's president since 2015

Sirisena's unexpected firing of Wickremesinghe, who served as prime minister in a unity government with Sirisena, has plunged the South Asian island nation into a constitutional crisis.

Sri Lanka has been gripped by political turmoil since President Maithripala Sirisena sacked his former ally, prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, on October 26 and appointed Rajapakse in his place.

Critics of Sirisena's actions say Parliament was suspended to give Rajapaksa time to gather enough support to survive a no-confidence vote when lawmakers reconvene November 14.

A new caretaker government has since then been appointed, with Wickremesinghe and other political parties calling the move illegal and urging Speaker Jayasuriya to convene Parliament to prove their majority.

A majority in parliament has requested that all changes made have been anti-constitutional and against the traditions.

TNA legislator Dharmalingam Sithadthan said the president had called the Tamil legislators to a meeting Wednesday - the same day parliament was expected to reconvene.

Mr. Rajapaksa's supporters have accused Mr. Wickremesinghe of selling Sri Lanka's assets, citing a 99-year lease agreement his government struck with China Merchants Port Holdings Co. "Therefore I am compelled to accept the status quo prior to the changes until the new group shows the majority".

'Lucky' Manchester United giving Mourinho white hair
The come-from-behind success left United manager Mourinho at a loss to explain his team's poor start. Even Netherlands should pay attention , as he could become one of their starting centre-backs, too.

It is stated in the special gazette notification that parliament is called on the 14th according to the powers vested on the president by sub-ordinance 3.1 of the 70th ordinance of the constitution.

The sudden development came amid growing tensions between Sirisena and Wickremesinghe on several policy matters and the President has been critical of the Prime Minister and his policies, especially on economy and security. "The public must protest the way the MPs are being brought for money", Abeywardena said.

GL Peiris, a leading Rajapaksa backer, however said the no confidence motion can not be taken up in a hurry.

The deposed leader has demanded a vote to prove his majority.

Busloads of Rajapakse followers were arriving Monday from across the country for the rally planned near parliament in the capital Colombo.

Tensions had been building between Sirisena and Wickremesinghe for some time, as the president did not approve of economic reforms introduced by the prime minister.

Former Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne, Cabinet, State, and Deputy Ministers, Parliamentarians, Provincial Council members, and members of Local Government bodies of the United People's Freedom Alliance, religious representatives, civil society organisations and Trade Union members joined the rally.
