The Associated Press reported that 237 women ran for the House as major-party candidates in 2018, spurred in many cases by the #MeToo movement and a renewed interest in politics following the 2016 election of President Donald Trump, whose attitudes toward women have been questioned.

Women will break the current record of 84 serving at the same time in the U.S. House. The data showed that this year, white women split their vote between Democratic and Republican candidates for the House, but they preferred Republican candidates in 2010 and 2014.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez rose to fame in her surprise victory in the primaries, defeating incumbent Democrat Rep. Joe Crowley (D-N.Y.) for New York's 14th Congressional District.

At 29, Ocasio-Cortez is the youngest woman ever elected to Congress.

Jared Polis easily won his bid for Colorado's gubernatorial seat Tuesday night and in doing so became the first openly gay man ever elected as governor.

The "women's wave" included MA, where Democrat Ayanna Pressley was elected by Seventh District voters to be the first African-American woman to represent the state as a House member.

Barcelona's Lionel Messi not in squad to face Inter Milan
However, the five-time Ballon d'Or victor was not on Ernesto Valverde's 18-man squad when it was released prior to the match. Barcelona have won all of their last four matches without Messi, including a 2-0 win over Inter at the Camp Nou last month.

Sharice Davids was projected to win a district in Kansas for the Democrats, which would make her one of the first Native American women elected to Congress.

Voters in Minnesota and MI elected the first two Muslim women to serve in the U.S. Congress, a former refugee who fled Somalia's civil war and a Detroit-born Palestinian-American.

In Minnesota, Omar, a 36-year-old naturalized American citizen and state representative, campaigned on policies embraced by the Democratic Party's most liberal wing: universal health care, free college tuition and robust public housing.

Most Americans say women running in record numbers for Congress is a good thing, but there's less consensus about whether they think things will change with more women in office, according to a Pew Research Center survey.

Rashida Tlaib is one of the first Muslim women elected to Congress and will represent Michigan's 13th Congressional District.

She also identified what policies she intends to target in office, including abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement, student loan debt (which she called "a ticking time bomb for our economy") and "the role of money in politics". According to VoteCast, women voted considerably more in favor of their congressional Democratic candidate: about 6 in 10 voted for the Democrat, compared with 4 in 10 for the Republican. Democrats have also crowed, loudly and often, about the number of women they had on the ballot - many of whom won last night.

"I've seen every year that we got another woman elected to the United States Senate, when each woman came in, every single woman in the United States Senate grew 5 inches taller", said Richards. Sylvia Garcia won big in the Houston area. Tallahassee, Florida Mayor Andrew Gillum lost to Ron DeSantis, shooting down hopes that the Sunshine State would elect their first Black governor.

"Now you don't have to worry if you're going to call me congressman or congresswoman or congress lady", Blackburn said in her victory speech.
