Elsewhere, it was a great night for "Never Be The Same" hitmaker Camila Cabello, who won four out of the six awards she was nominated for including the prestigious Best Artist gong. "I am one of those women", she declared.

Beyoncé, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Cardi B, Adele, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Mariah Carey and Jennifer Lopez did not attend either.

Cabello appeared on a special pink carpet for the awards ceremony, wearing a red gown.

In his acceptance speech, the sister of Michael Jackson said, speaking in the name "of those women whose voices have been silenced". Nicki Minaj won two awards. At The Disco made an action-movie entry.

Minaj also received the awards for "Best Look" and "Best Hip-Hop". BTS took home both the 2018 MTV EMA Biggest Fans Award and the Best Group Award.

"I'm sick, I'm repulsed, I'm infuriated by the double standards that continue to treat women as second-class citizens", she continued. She delivered her heart-torn "Without Me" while chained inside a large transparent cube.
