Watts is accused of killing his wife, Shanann, and his two young daughters, Bella and Celeste.
Christopher Watts, 33, was charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of his wife Shanann and two daughters Celeste and Bella in Colorado in August, according to a press release from the Weld County District Attorney's Office.
Initially, Watts told police that he killed his wife in a rage; that she had strangled the daughters after he had acknowledged an affair and his intention to separate.
Watts acknowledged strangling his wife, Shanann, 34, and their daughters, Bella, 4, and Celeste, 3, and dumping their bodies in an oil field belonging to Anadarko Petroleum, where Watts had worked until he was arrested in the case, according to Denver 7 News.
As the judge read each charge one by one, Watts pleaded "guilty", his voice sometimes cracking. He said the family was strongly against pursuing the death penalty, especially after they discussed the extensive delays in the process in Colorado.
The girls' bodies were found in oil barrels and Shanann's body was found in a shallow grave nearby.
'That to me was the most important consideration in deciding how to proceed in this a case.
The plea deal was approved by Shanann's family who told the district attorney they did not want to end his life as he did their daughter's and grandchildren's.
"That's about as firmly as she could have said it to me".
Later, as people searched for his missing family, Watts told CNN affiliate KMGH he had had an emotional conversation with his wife, Shanann, the last time he saw her.
As part of the sentencing agreement, Watts will spend the rest of his life in prison for the first-degree murder charges. "I just want them to come back". Rourke said their wishes were the most compelling factor for him in reaching the plea agreement. "I know that that will never be fully realized because, obviously, the tragedy that sits before us today is the loss of four lovely lives (including Shanann's unborn baby)".
"I can only say that I hope there is a sense of closure", Weld County District Attorney Michael Rourke said following the hearing.
Investigators never believed Watts' stories, Rourke said.
Watts' family had all flown out to Colorado in order to be in court today to support him.
Rourke said Tuesday that investigators never believed that Watts was being entirely truthful. "The spotlight shines directly where it belongs: On him".
Watts will receive his other sentencing terms on November 19, the date on which his status conference was previously scheduled.
