  • Jeff Sessions resigns as attorney general at Trump's request

Both called for the recusal of Matthew Whitaker, who Trump announced on Twitter will become the new acting attorney general.

Sessions suffered Trump's ire - which included tweets calling him "beleaguered" and his recusal an "unforced betrayal" - quietly, and only occasionally issued extremely subtle rebukes to the President's war against the Justice Department for its Russian Federation investigation.

Referring to reports at the time that the special counsel probe had widened to focus on possible financial crimes, unconnected to the 2016 election, Whitaker wrote that it was time for the Justice Department "to order Mueller to limit the scope of his investigation". "He will serve our Country well", tweeted the President.

"We thank Attorney General Jeff Sessions for his service, and wish him well!"

Democrats have slammed Whitaker's appointment to replace Sessions, arguing that Trump is trying to undermine Mueller and demanding that Whitaker recuse himself from supervising the Mueller investigation due to his writings and public comments attacking the investigation.

"According to NBC News, Voters Nationwide Disapprove of the so-called Mueller Investigation (46%) more than they Approve (41%)".

Whitaker, a former United States attorney for the Southern District of Iowa, had served as Sessions's chief-of-staff since September 2017. Why is the President making this change and who has authority over Special Counsel Mueller's investigation?

In his resignation letter, Sessions said that he was submitting his resignation "at your request", which is essentially another way of saying he was terminated.

Sessions' departure was widely expected to come soon after Tuesday's congressional elections in which Republicans retained their majority in the Senate but lost control of the House of Representatives. The complaint was filed over a $25,000 campaign contribution Bondi received from Mr. Trump through his foundation in 2013, around which time Bondi's office was being asked about alleged fraud at Trump University. Mr Trump wrote on Wednesday. The piece goes on to cite law enforcement sources who say non-Russia-related leads that "involve Trump associates" are being referred to the special counsel "to encourage subjects of the investigation to cooperate".
