  • Indonesian Plane Delayed For An Hour Over Freight Of Stinky Fruit

The Sriwijaya Air flight, headed to Jakarta from Bengkulu province in Sumatra, was carrying more than two tons of durian.

Some passengers argued with crew members and nearly came to the point of physical altercation, according to the Jakarta Times.

The durian fruit has been banned from public transport and hotels in some countries because of its "stinky" smell, which has been described by food writer Richard Sterling as "turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock".

An Indonesian airliner was delayed for an hour after passengers complained of an overpowering stench released from a load of the notorious thorny fruit durian, according to reports. In April, 600 people were evacuated from the library of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology - and crews were dispatched to check for gas leaks - after a rotting durian was left inside a cupboard.

A shipment of durian, sometimes referred to the "king of fruits", was removed from the plane after complaints.

Around 900 troops have arrived at the US-Mexico border since the Trump administration announced the deployment on October 26. But on the campaign trail, Trump has painted a darker picture of the caravan without evidence, calling it an "invasion".

Sriwijaya Air eventually made a decision to unload the sacks of durian from the flight, causing them to depart at 11.40am, an hour later than scheduled.

Some passengers even argued that apart from the unpleasant smell, they were also concerned by the extra weight on board.

Pasenger Amir Zidane wrote on his Facebook page on Monday that he and his friends were among the last to board the flight to Jakarta at Fatmawati Soekarno Bengkulu Airport in Bengkulu, Indonesia, and "the scent of duress was already felt".

"It's normal for every airline to carry durian during a flight as long as it is packaged properly and put inside the cargo hold in accordance with the standards and procedures", Kyodo News quoted Maya as saying in a statement.

The plane flew to its destination of Jakarta an hour late. Passengers on the ground later recorded crews unloading the shipment of durian from the cargo area. His Facebook post about the incident has been shard more than 20,000 times as of Wednesday afternoon.
