Did an alien space probe pass near Earth past year?

One of the most freakish pieces of space news that keeps popping up this year is the story of Oumuamua, a cigar-shaped object that sped through our Solar System so fast that scientists barely had time to glimpse it before it was already headed back out into space.

If nothing else, Loeb hopes this story serves as a vehicle to make the Search for Extraterrestrial Life Institute (SETI) more mainstream through evidence-based science.

Since its discovery, scientists have been at odds to explain its unusual features and precise origins, with researchers first calling it a comet and then an asteroid, before finally deeming it the first of its kind: a new class of "interstellar objects".

Observers dismissed the acceleration as the result of a release of gas from within the rock, but astronomers Shmuel Bialy and Abraham Loeb are the whole matter, reasoning that if Oumuamua had merely been a comet undergoing outgassing, the release would have set the object to spinning.

Oumuamua, which translates as "distant messenger from the past" in Hawaiian, can reach speeds of up to 196,000mph.

Scientists have been puzzling over "Oumuamua" ever since the mysterious object was seen tumbling past the sun in late 2017.

The scientists also noted that light-sails with similar dimensions have originated on earth. A light sail is an advanced, but still theoretical, form of spacecraft propulsion that would use radiation pressure from a star to push an object along, like wind on a sailboat's sail. "If Oumuamua is a lightsail", he added, "one possibility is that it was floating in interstellar space when our solar system ran into it, "like a ship bumping into a buoy on the surface of the ocean".

A new study as found a huge cigar-shaped object travelling through space could be an alien spaceship.

Early on, the object was thought to be a comet, but observers later decided it was obviously an asteroid.

"Bailer-Jones" paper on possible origin sites for 'Oumuamua was accepted by the Astrophysical Journal in September. "Carl Sagan once said, "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence" and this paper is distinctly lacking in evidence nevermind extraordinary evidence".

Loeb said he is not definitively claiming the object is alien, but said it is important to acknowledge the possibility.

A certain "discrepancy" in the object's movement "is readily solved if 'Oumuamua does not follow a random trajectory but is rather a targeted probe", they write. In order for it to be effective, Oumuamua needs to be less than a millimeter in thickness, like a sail. It's also possible Oumuamua was just created to wander through space, collecting information, and our solar system just happened to be in its way - its operators weren't necessarily looking to pry into the lives of humans.
