Democrats grab US House in blow for Trump

Major US TV networks projected Democrats would take control of the House while Republicans would retain the majority in the Senate.

Jared Polis, who won the Colorado governor's race, is the first openly homosexual person to be elected governor in the U.S. Sharice Davids, a lesbian Native American and former mixed martial arts fighter, won Kansas's third district to the joy of homosexual advocacy groups. Republicans may not be celebrating when they see results, but Democrats are certain to have a smile on their faces.

Throughout the midterm elections, Republicans had been anxious that Democrats would take the House as a so-called "green wave" of money flowed to Democratic candidates in the final weeks before the midterms.

Millions of Americans voted Tuesday, and results have been projected in several races in the United States midterms, the critical first nationwide election seen as a referendum on Donald Trump's presidency.

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi says the midterm elections are basically a referendum on Republican efforts to scrap Obamacare.

In suburban Virginia, Democrat Jennifer Wexton ousted incumbent Republican Barbara Comstock, while another Democrat, Donna Shalala, seized a Republican district in Florida.

More women than ever were running, along with military veterans and minorities, many of them motivated by Trump's rise.

She said that the election result is about "restoring the system of checks and balances" in Trump administration thus indicating that the new Democratic party would play the role of a strong opponent in for the US President.

Republican candidates in some of the country's most competitive races gambled by tying themselves to Trump in a bid to turn out voters. A slow-moving caravan of thousands of Central American migrants trekking to the USA has served as ready fodder for Trump's diatribes for border security and immigration reform, and a roaring economy has helped the GOP foster confidence in their leadership. Those bills passed the House only to die in the Senate, where Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has refused to revise rules requiring 60 Senate votes for most bills, and pro-abortion Republicans Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski had the power to block simple-majority votes.

Ron DeSantis Beats Andrew Gillum To Become Florida Governor
DeSantis , meanwhile, was plagued by accusations of racism following remarks he made the day after his primary victory in August. Despite all the hype surrounding Gillum, he failed to gain as many votes as his senatorial counterpart, incumbent Democrat Sen.

Health care and immigration were high on voters' minds as they cast ballots in the midterm elections, per a wide-ranging survey by The Associated Press.

Actually passing many bills, however, will be hard because the GOP will fall well short of the 60 votes needed to break through Democratic filibusters, procedural delays that kill legislation. Ballot counting could drag in tight races, leaving some races undecided long after Election Day.

Democrats, whose very relevance in the Trump era depended on winning at least one chamber of Congress, were laser-focused on health care as they predicted victories that would break up the GOP's monopoly in Washington and state governments.

Democrat Abigail Spanberger of Virginia defeated Republican incumbent Dave Brat in suburban Richmond to put Democrats over the top. Democrats are relying more upon women, people of colour, young people and college graduates.

The GOP's hold on the majority was complicated by an unusually large number of retirements as well as persistent infighting between conservatives and centrists, with much of the conflict centered on the question of allegiance to Trump.

Aides set up televisions in the White House residence for Trump, first lady Melania Trump and their guests to watch election results come in, with the sets tuned to different cable news channels. The other 29 Republican-held seats are considered toss-ups. When he took office in 2009, Democrats controlled both chambers of 27 state legislatures.

Democrats were defending a whopping 10 seats in states won by Trump in 2016.

The committee also distanced itself from eight-term Rep. Steve King of Iowa after racial remarks, and his seat was unexpectedly contested in the final week of the campaign. But being elected as speaker in January requires the majority of the whole House - 218 votes.
