World Health Organization condemns `AIDS curing preacher' in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe's controversial Prophet Walter Magaya on Thursday retracted claims that he had found a cure for HIV amid intense political pressure.

The court heard Magaya attempted to destroy some of the exhibits by flashing them in the office toilets and burning the containers which were however covered half burnt.

Magaya announced to his congregants last Sunday that he spent two-years praying to God to lead him to the source of the cure.

Besides stirring anger among Western medical experts who said Magaya was giving false hope to the sick, the Health ministry pointedly pooh-poohed his claims and any suggestions that he had the support of the government or might have got approval for his organic medicine.

He was granted $300 bail and remanded to November 29.

Baltimore Amazon warehouse wall collapse: 2 dead, fire chief says
Fire Chief Roman Clark told the Baltimore Sun a 50-foot wall fell down at the Amazon Fulfillment Center as a storm hit the area. At least two people are dead after a partial building collapse on Friday night at an Amazon warehouse in Baltimore.

Verifications were made through Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe on their records and it was established that Aguma is not a registered medicine or drug in Zimbabwe.

"We write to seek an urgent retraction of your claim to cure HIV and Aids". The government turned the heat on Magaya on Wednesday after it obtained a warrant to search for and seize his herbs - which later saw detectives combing one of his premises in Marlborough where unregistered prescription preparatory medicines, drug manufacturing and packaging machines, as well as drug manufacturing raw materials were recovered.

"As ZADHR, we give you notice to take remedial action within seven calendar days of this notice by withdrawing all products that purport, claim or infer that they cure HIV and Aids from the market forthwith and making a public statement that withdraws your initial claim to have found a cure for HIV". I, after discovering what I discovered, which was tested, and holding a report which was overwhelming to myself, I went on and announced what I was carrying in my hands without taking note of the authorities of Zimbabwe. I apologize once again.

His claims were dismissed by the World Health Organisation, the United Nations and medical bodies in the country.

The WHO's representative in Zimbabwe, Dr Alex Gasaira says "there is no cure for HIV infection".
