U.S. congressman blames Trump over killing of Shiite protesters

  • AFP | Nigeria's army put the death toll at six but the Islamic Movement of Nigeria said 49 of its members had been killed

In the video, Mr Trump said armed troops should consider equating rock-throwing with shooting from a rifle.

Nigeria's defence spokesman John Agim told AFP that the army posted the video in response to criticism that its security forces had acted unlawfully. "We're not going to put with that", the president said in the video.

In its own version of the report, TheCable quotes the Nigerian Army as saying: "They (the Shiites) fired weapons at own troops, throwing bottle canisters with fuel, large stones, catapults with risky objects and other unsafe items at troops causing bodily harm and stopping motorist movement, breaking their windscreen and causing heavy traffic".

The Nigerian Army has defended its shooting of members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) by sharing a video of United States President Donald Trump issuing a warning to migrants.

"It seems the Nigerian military are deliberately using tactics created to kill when dealing with IMN gatherings".

On Thursday, 120 of 400 IMN members arrested by police on Monday were charged with "rioting, disturbance of public peace and causing hurt", said a court official in Abuja on Friday.

But a spokesman for the Nigerian army says their decision to fire live rounds at protesters in Abuja was justified because they were armed, telling the BBC "this is what [Mr] Trump was talking about".

Barrick Gold woos Randgold shareholders with higher dividend
Both the profitability ratios suggest a mixed sentiment for Barrick Gold Corporation ( NYSE : ABX ) and Freeport-McMoran, Inc. The EPS estimate for next year as estimated by analysts is at 0.44 while EPS for next quarter is estimated at 0.12.

In Nigeria, Trump is a popular figure among many people who praise what they regard as his straightforwardness and frank talk despite his reported insult to the nation a year ago when he said Nigerians in the United States would never "go back to their huts" in Africa.

"We intervened only because the IMN members are trying to harm our people, they are always meeting us ... at security checkpoints and trying to provoke us, they even burned a police vehicle".

The Nigerian director of defense, Brigade General John Agim, told the BBC the tweet was in reaction to Amnesty International's damning investigation, released on October 31, that found "excessive force" by soldiers and police led to the killing of at least 45 supporters of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) over two days.

The post, which seems to have been deleted, came days after Shia protests in Nigeria turned deadly.

The Nigerian military tells a different story. "We responded to them". He said 13 other protesters were killed during two other marches this week, one before and one after Monday's deadly march.

Videos showed protestors throwing rocks at soldiers as they ran from flying bullets. No president should be embracing the horrific use of excessive force. "I am surprised that the Army will use Trump as a role model". Boko Haram, the Islamist extremist group, labels Shia as "heretics" and demands that they be killed.
