Another child has died amid a deadly virus outbreak at a New Jersey rehabilitation, bringing the total number of deaths to nine, officials said Sunday.

They said the unidentified child who died Saturday evening at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Haskell was "medically fragile", CBS News reported.

In some versions of a story October 25 about a viral outbreak, The Associated Press misspelled the name of the New Jersey health commissioner.

"We are working every day to ensure all infection control protocols are continuously followed and closely monitoring the situation at the facility", Health Commissioner Dr. Shereef Elnahal said in a statement.

Adenovirus is a respiratory virus that can causes mild or serious illness.

Officials say the outbreak occurred between September 26 and October 22.

The outbreak has attacked children who were already weak with severely compromised immune systems, officials said.

Another will be sent to the University Hospital in Newark, New Jersey, where a premature baby died amid a bacterial infection. Twenty-five children have been sickened in the outbreak, as has one staff member at the facility.

The ninth child became ill before October 22 and died on October 28, the New Jersey Department of Health said. Eleven other children remain sick.

A health department spokesman said: "The strain of adenovirus seen in this outbreak is associated with communal living arrangements and known to cause severe illness".

In the same report, the New Jersey spokeswoman Nicole Kirgan said children are particularly at risk with this virus. During a site visit last week, inspectors identified "hand-washing deficiencies", and state health officials have barred the center from admitting new patients until the outbreak is past.

The state health department has sent a team of investigators to the facility to determine the cause of the outbreak.

The department is continuing to investigate the outbreak.
