  • National Drug Takeback Day Set For Saturday

In April, almost 950,000 pounds of prescription drugs were collected through National Take Back Day.

"National Prescription Drug Take Back Day gives Virginians a safe, convenient, and responsible way to get rid of unneeded or expired prescription medications, and is also an important tool in combatting the opioid epidemic", said Northam.

Saturday, Oct. 27, is the latest Take-Back Day, according to the program's sponsor, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). The drugs will later be destroyed by the DEA.

If you missed Barling Drug Take Back you can still participate.

Frances Ann Stultz stopped by the Winter Park Police Department on Saturday morning to drop off her unwanted prescription pills. The partnership is part of the bi-annual National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, according to a MWRD press release. Prescription drugs pose dangers to children and others who may take them by accident or who may use them for abusive purposes. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines--flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash--both pose potential safety and health hazards.

Cabrini's Security Manager Alex Castaneda said according to the CDC, 66 percent of drug induced deaths past year were due to opioid use.
