  • Viral Outbreak at New Jersey Rehabilitation Center Leaves 6 Children Dead

The facility houses an adult nursing home, a rehabilitation center and a pediatrics unit.

The kids are pediatric residents with "severely compromised immune systems" at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Haskell, the state Department of Health said in a statement.

Six pediatric patients are dead and 12 others sick due to a "severe" viral outbreak at a facility in New Jersey, the Department of Health said in a statement Tuesday.

An investigation is ongoing, but the center has agreed not to admit new patients until the outbreak is deemed over.

Adenovirus, according to the health department, are a family of viruses that often cause mild illness, particularly in young children.

Adenoviruses are part of a group of viruses that can infect the membranes or tissue lining of the respiratory tract, eyes, intestines, urinary tract and nervous system, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

But in practice, he said, transgender people would still have legal protection because the courts have ruled that they are covered under the umbrella of sex discrimination.

This strain is associated with disease in communal living facilities, the officials said.

Nicole Kirgan, a spokeswoman for the health department, told Daily Mail Online in a statement that the outbreak was caused by adenovirus type 7.

Some strains of adenovirus can cause the common cold, sore throat, while other, more serious issues, can cause bladder or stomach inflammation.

The department said it was notified of respiratory illness at the Wannaque Center on October 9, and has been in close communication with officials there since.

State health officials continue to investigate the outbreak, but initial investigations turned up "minor handwashing deficiencies" at Wanaque.

This is a breaking news story.
