  • An NYPD officer wears an older Vievu body cam model. On Sunday a Vievu LE-5

The NYPD has pulled some Vievu body cameras from the streets after an LE-5 model (similar to the LE-3 seen here) exploded on Sunday. Those equipped with the LE-4, another Vievu model, will continue to use them and officers who had the LE-5 won't have any body camera.

There were a total of 2,990 LE-5 body cams were used in 16 NYPD commands around the city.

"Out of an abundance of caution, the Police Commissioner has directed that the continued use and distribution of the LE-5 model cameras be suspended effective immediately", the statement said. The department meant to finish its body cam deployment by 2019, but it might have to push back that goal if it ends up replacing thousands of those units.

As for what caused the Vievu camera to catch fire, the NYPD believes the "incident revealed a potential for the battery inside the camera to ignite", but is now investigating. It then exploded, the NYPD said in a statement.

New 'Halloween' Has A Record Breaking Opening Weekend
The Melissa McCarthy film "Can You Ever Forgive Me", about the literary forger Lee Israel, grossed $150,000 in five locations. The weekend was up almost 72 percent from the same weekend last October and the year to date is up almost 11 percent.

"The cause and the scope of the defect are now being investigated", police officials said in a statement.

According to The Daily Beast, approximately 15,500 body cameras are now deployed throughout the New York Police Department.

NY1 reported Police Commissioner James O'Neill is prohibiting his officers from using the Vievu LE5 until the cameras can be fixed. "We are working closely with the NYPD to investigate this issue", a spokesperson said.

The incident occurred around 12am, and the officer was not injured.
