Now, Banksy has uploaded a video suggesting the entire canvas was supposed to shred, and not just two thirds of it.

A hooded figure can be seen constructing the mechanism in a studio during the almost 3-minute clip titled "Shredding the Girl and Balloon - The Director's Cut". "Not really. Perhaps we are hoping for it", said auctioneer Arnaud Oliveux of Artcurial auction house in Paris, which is selling three Banksy prints next week.

The auction house said the buyer, who was identified only as "a female European collector and a long-standing client", made a decision to continue with the purchase at the original price.

"In rehearsals it worked every time." explained a caption in the new video, titled "Shredding the Girl and Balloon - The Director's Cut".

The street artist posted a video on his Instagram of the incident and it showed the piece of art being shredded, however, only half of it got the chop.

A clip shos someone pressing a button on a black box which sets off the shredder to destroy the art. The 2006 piece was subsequently renamed "Love is in the Bin" and was certified by Banksy's Pest Control company, which keeps his identity secret. Sotheby's did not name the buyer.

Depicting a girl reaching towards a bright red heart-shaped balloon, the spray paint and acrylic on canvas Girl With Balloon is one of Banksy's best-known images. About this English artist said on his YouTube channel.

But the stunt may have caused the work's value to skyrocket - leading many cynics to believe the anti-establishment artist was in cahoots with the auction house.

The lot had been estimated to sell for £200,000 to £300,000 before the auction.

The self-destruction was the latest in a long history of anti-establishment statements by the street artist.
